Black Panther

There is some confusion with the word panther and leopard. On the one hand, Panthera is a genus of cats, which includes four species, the leopard and jaguar mentioned, as well as lions (Panthera leo), tigers (Panthera tigris).

On the other hand, there Leopardus genus, including several American cat species, including the ocelot (Leopardus pardalis). The generic name was chosen for its superficial resemblance to the leopard in relation to mottled coat color, however, be remembered that the leopard belongs to another genus (Panthera).

Finally, there is the Spanish word panther, which is used in another sense, the scientific name Panthera, because, obviously, nobody calls the lion panther or tiger despite belonging to this genus.

In South America the jaguar is called Panther, in North America, the term panther is commonly used to refer to the cougar (genus Puma), and the rest of the world, especially in Africa and Asia, is used to describe the leopard.
